Nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar could be coming to San Antonio in the next few years. Under a new program that CPS is calling their Flexible Path vision, they have created a goal of achieving 50% renewable generation by 2040. According to CPS, they will seek to add up to 900 megawatts (MW) of solar, 50 MW of battery storage, and 500 MW of “new technology solutions.”
The news marks another massive solar expansion in Texas, a state that is undergoing a rapid boom in renewable development. Texas is currently home to roughly 4,600 MW of installed capacity, ranking 5th overall in the nation in 2020.

New utility-scale solar is poised to push much of the remaining coal-fired power fleet across Texas into retirement in the next few years, according to a new report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).
The report – Solar Surge Set to Drive Much of Remaining Texas Coal-Fired Fleet Offline – describes the increasing vulnerability of coal plants across the power-generation market managed by the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), an area that covers most of the state. It sees upward of 70% of daytime coal-fired generation in ERCOT being at risk by 2022.

The Top Solar Contractors list is developed each year by Solar Power World to honor the work of solar installers big and small. Solar firms in the utility, commercial and residential markets are ranked by number of kilowatts installed in the previous year.
