The 3G Sunset & Your SolarEdge Inverter

Check out the FAQ below and the calendar with available dates and times to learn about your options.

FAQ

What is happening to the 3G Network?

The 3G network will be shut down nationally making room for faster networks. This affects a wide range of devices including home security systems, roadside assistance systems, cell phones, medical alert devices, and yes – your solary system’s inverter. Note – this shutdown will not interrupt the production of your solar system.

When is the 3G Sunset?

The national 3G network will began to phase out at the end of April. There is no set phase schedule for particular devices. Your communication may cease at the end of April or at any point between then and the end of the year. By 2023, all 3G network communication will no longer exist.

Is this only affecting solar systems?

No. This is a nationwide problem affecting millions of devices such as home security systems, roadside assistance systems, medical alert devices, and cell phones.

How does this impact my solar system?

No part of your solar system is failing due to this issue. Your entire solar system is operating as it normally does. The issue is one of communication. Normally your inverter communicates to SolarEdge via a 3G network to deliver data so you know what is happening to your production. Your system’s modem will still functioning and trying to send this info out, but the network over which it does this will no longer exists. The mobile carriers who run these networks are shutting them down.

Do I need to take any action at this time?

We advise that you upgrade to a new modem so that you can stay on top of your system’s production data. This also makes it easier for Wells to deliver updates and stay on top of your monitoring. If you would like to learn about your options and avoid this issue, schedule time with us using the calendar on this page.

If you decide not to update your inverter, your solar system will continue to produce power, but it will not communicate wirelessly.

If I choose to not take action, how can I monitor system production?

Your inverter has a QR code on it that you can scan with the mySolarEdge app you normally check production data with. Click this link to view an instructional video on how to check your system’s production manually.
