Bell County Homeowner Loves Tracking His Solar Energy Savings

Guillermo Ybarra and his wife retired in Killeen after he was stationed at Fort Hood. Guillermo was part of a small contingent of Air Force personnel who live in the area and handle duties that the Army doesn’t manage. It’s worth noting that the Ft Hood base is the largest in Texas, and one of the largest in the world.

Scroll down to read what Guillermo says about his experience becoming a Wells Solar customer in 2018.

Why did you decide to switch to solar energy?

The main driving force was the high electric bills that we started having. May, June, July bills were $250 to $300. We decided to look into solar to see if it cost less than regular electricity, and to see if we could save money.

What were you surprised to learn about solar energy?

I didn’t realize how cool it would be to have all of the different apps for tracking energy use and solar energy production. Wells installed a Sense for monitoring my energy consumption, and I can track the solar with the SolarEdge app. I look at the apps weekly, in fact I can tell you how many watts are being used when my kids turn on all of their electronics.

What made you choose Wells Solar for your solar installation?

I really like the 25 year parts and labor warranty that was offered to me. Other companies maybe only have 3-5 years of parts and labor coverage, and then the homeowner is liable for the system.

We had a roof leak and when I called the Wells Solar Service Department they responded very rapidly, they came out that same day to look at the issue. It turns out that we had a turkey vulture living on our roof, and it had eaten some shingles and created a hole about the size of a silver dollar. Even though the leak wasn’t caused by the solar system, Wells didn’t charge me any sort of “surprise fees” for coming out to see what was going on. I hired a roofer, and it’s all fixed now.

You know those times when you buy something and you’re happy about the warranty you paid for? I was so happy that I went with Wells, because their warranty is better than the competition.

What benefits have you seen since going solar?

My friends don’t believe me when I go through the math on my savings, they think it’s too good to be true. But the truth is that solar really does work, and yes you really save money.

Between the solar loan and the new power bill from Green Mountain, we save around 35% of our annual electricity costs. Meaning at the end of the year, what we pay for solar and what we pay in new power bills is 35% lower than our old power bills.

We’re on track to have around a $4 dollar bill for this month (April to May), and then the next bill is normally a credit and starts the credit time frame. August is the hottest month of the year, so we normally pay higher bills due to a/c.

Pictured above: Power bill data from August 2019 to March 2019. In April, May and June of 2019 he produced 100% of his own electricity with solar and received power bill credits for the extra energy he sold to his power company.

What would you say to someone who is interested in going solar?

Basically I tell people that the cost benefit analysis makes sense. Look at your bills through the year, subtract 35% and that’s probably what you’ll save.If you have kids you use more electricity, like us.

We’re actually starting to overpay on our monthly finance cost. Like paying off a mortgage ahead of time, we’re trying to enjoy as much of the savings as possible. My energy costs will be one less thing that I worry about when I’m older.

That and I think it’s important for people to know that companies offer different warranty terms, and if you’re not careful you will end up paying for a warranty service call down the line. But not if you go solar with Wells!
